We knew my Kiwi friends Henry and Helen were probably on a tour of the South Island. But on a lark, we decided to add the Coromandel to our itinerary and travel to Onemana to leave a note on their doorstep saying that we had been there. Mind you, I had a rough idea as to their location but did not have a street address. Using a variety of methods that would have made Detective Perot proud, we eventually found their home. And, were we glad that we made the trip!

When you talk to someone who travels, you sometimes hear "picture postcard perfect." The little community of Onemana just north of
Whangamata on New Zealand's Coromandel is such a place. Frankly, the location ranks as one of my top five most beautiful places I have seen. Granted you see similar views in Oregon and Northern California, but you don't have the crystal clean air or the sense of isolation. To this writer, I could spend weeks there just absorbing the heady vistas and write the great American novel. Wait, I guess it would be the great New Zealand novel. Anyway, you get my gist.

Enough background, now to the poem!
Onemana
On a fluke, I headed to leave a note to friends
Traveling across oceans and land
To make my presence known

They were on a journey southward
I, on my personal walk about

The village is called Onemana, their home
Perhaps one of the most wondrous places I've seen

A lone road twists across the Coromandel
Leading to this shangri-la and the sea

Sky so blue that you become lost in it
Whitecaps smashing against the sandy, rugged shore

Air that caused an oxygen high
All part of this scene

Oh my, can such a place exist?
Or am I simply dreaming?
