When in Auckland, the City of Sails, you must take time to enjoy this dynamic city. Part of this enjoyment should include a harbour cruise. An inexpensive way to do that, actually only a few dollars U.S. round-trip, is to take the 12 minute ferry trip over to the historic seaside suburb of Devonport. You catch the ferry from downtown. The views of Waitemata Harbour can't be beat. Once in Devonport, you step back into time. In fact, this little community has served as the film location for several American movies over the years - the directors wanted a town that looked like '50's Small-town U.S.A. Nevertheless, don't be misled. Devonport is very much a modern community with shops, restaurants, and beaches. Enjoy a stroll around the community. Be sure to enjoy a meal at McHugh's Restaurant, (Just ask for directions.). The buffet lunch will be one of the best you have ever had. The desserts, you could die for. The view from your table is worth the price alone. You overlook the 2000 America Cup course which the Kiwis successfully defended. Obviously, I had to write some poetic verse regarding glorious Devonport.

Devonport

Devonport,
....a journey into an idealistic past
Beaches crowded only by gulls
Couples meandering
....soaking up the quietness
Offshore, the America's Cup course
....now only tranquil waves remaining
Peaks and ridges rise across the Bay
Landscapes
....beyond the capture of any artist
A place for quiet respite
Devonport, a seaside jewel
