Whakapapa Ski Area is on of two ski areas located on Mt. Ruapehu. The other is Turoa. When people think of skiing in New Zealand, they tend to think only of the South Island. However, having skied both islands extensively, Whaka is still one of my favorites, perhaps because it is the area where we learned to downhill skill. Obviously, from the pictures below there is no snow. The snows won't start falling for another month. By late June, the rocks are covered with snow for some spectacular skiing. None the less, I enjoyed my eerie ride through the clouds imagining I was skiing Whaka's slopes again.
