Opening Comments from Bob

This Issue: As with previous Christmas issues, the number of pictures are minimal. Instead the focus is on the Holiday Season. The first poem, Home for Christmas, was printed in the 100th PJ issue, 2009. It is a more traditional Christmas poem. The second poem, Moments, speaks to a greater universal lesson.

Two Poems this Month

Home for Christmas

Sentimental words uttered
......during a festive holiday season.
Ones that often
......bring a smile to one’s face.
Hidden within the phrase are
......so many images–
......festive, decorated homes;
......pine smell permeating the living room;
......an easy chair that is molded to your body;
......a place where you can be yourself;
......family gathered around the table;
......burning logs in the fireplace;
......laughter and love.

For some, these words are mere fantasies,
......only dreams that will never occur.
But my Christmas wish for each of you
......is that no matter where you are
......that you can be home for Christmas
......“if only in your dreams.”

Comments: (This poem first appeared in the 100th issue published in 2009.) I have been blessed throughout much of my life. I grew up in a loving, caring home with two wonderful parents and three loving sisters. When I think of returning home for Christmas, the thoughts given early in the poem are only pleasant ones. However, I realize that many in the world do not have such wonderful memories of home. But the ultimate purpose of this poem is to wish each of you great joy and happiness on this Christian holiday.

---------------------------------

Moments

Striving, grasping, crawling, running
......the goal just ahead.
Reaching and
......met.
Another soon set.
Happiness just beyond
......the fabled fingertips.
Why? Why?
Can’t I discover
......that mystical place
......for which all seem to yearn.
Perhaps, just perhaps,
......one forgets
......life’s only guarantee
......given since the beginning of time,
......the NOW, this Moment.
Aha! Understanding, comprehension,
......a smile touches the lips.

Comments: Not a traditional Christmas poem but contains what I believe to be a universal lesson to any who seek it. We so often live in the past or the future forgetting the only guarantee, the NOW.

A Brief Vignette this Month

I don't know about you, but being with family is one of the greatest joys of the Holiday Season. Many comedians and late night talk hosts joke about how many can hardly wait to escape the family "get together." I have never found that to be. Even in times of disagreement and different philosophies, I still recognize and feel the love, the glue that binds us. I hope you likewise can experience those feelings.

If you have a guest vignette you would like to submit, please do so. Not only will I enjoy reading it, but if agreeable with you and space permitting, I will print it in a future issue. The vignette should be written in paragraph form and relate a personal story or event. It should fit the overall tenor of this newsletter. Ideally, it should not exceed twenty lines. Please send to bob@poeticaljourneys.com.
