Hobart
Hobart is a long ways away in many ways from Sydney. As we walked down the stairs of the plane to the open-air luggage area at Hobart's airport, the brisk air hit us. It was at least 30 degrees cooler than Sydney. (Remember, it was early Fall in the Southern Hemisphere.) Secondly, the airport was not much larger than some of our county airports in the States. My immediate reaction as we drove into Hobart was one of surprise and questioning - surprise in that what I had perceived Hobart to be, it wasn't and questioning myself as to whether we had made a mistake in coming to this out-of-the-way Australian State. Even though it was only 7:00 P.M., it was very dark, both outside and within. Pleasantly, as the days passed, I realized we had made the right decision to visit this small island state. Patrick and I had a wonderful time exploring the area and meeting some of its people. Our hosts Stephen and Jennifer Bender at The Lodge on Elizabeth (now under new management) were especially helpful. (Ed.: The Benders have since left.) The Lodge is a great place to stay. We also had many delicious dining experiences, especially if you enjoy fresh, tasty seafood. My favorite epicurean experience was at Rozzini's. (No longer in business.)

When I first started planning the trip, I planned to stay in Hobart for approximately two weeks. I had hoped to develop an in-depth character for a book I am writing. The stay ended up being only 3.5 days. Luckily, I left with a poem that is one of my favorites from the trip, Port Arthur and the Isle of the Dead.

In summary, Hobart is quiet by Sydney standards but offers a different variety of interesting activities. It is a place to escape the hustle and bustle. Just as importantly, the people will reach out to you and make you feel welcome. Enjoy the visual tour of Hobart.
