Years ago, I had fun writing this poem. We all face struggles for survival, even the smallest creatures. Likewise, how often we savor victory only soon to suffer defeat. Just when you think you have it made, along comes “the swat.”

Jan and I stayed overnight at a wonderful hotel, Boulder Mountain Lodge, in the small village of Boulder, UT. While there, we ate at Hells Backbone Grille, which many consider one of Utah’s finest restaurants. Though those were wonderful experiences, the poem describes the most memorable one for me.
The next day, we checked with the hotel management and were told all the cats were feral and not pets.

Though long, this is a humorous poem that, if you know anything about yoga, you might find worth reading. (To read each section, you must click on each JPG.
The original version was written on a Friday evening in June 1999, after I returned to my hotel room from a 90-minute session that was part of a weekend yoga workshop I had enrolled in. At that time, I had been practicing yoga weekly for approximately five months. I was thoroughly enjoying the yoga experience and decided to attend this special weekend event with instructors flown in from California. Obviously, I was not ready.
After the event, I continued my yoga practice daily for over ten years, and even considered attending another workshop (which I never did). With the passing years, Tai Chi became my dominant practice. I laughed through the original writing of this poem and still chuckle at the experience. I remember calling my three sisters and my family, telling them in glorious detail about my near-death experience.
On a serious note, yoga really is about letting go, especially of ego. While I laugh at my experiences that evening, I learned much about myself and the role ‘ego’ played in my life. How often we fear failure and not measuring up to our expectations.
