We have been privileged to visit Maui over 20 times. Some sojourns were over a month at a time. Of the thousands of photos taken and locations, I have included a few of our favorites. Since the focus of this website is on poetry, I have included only a limited number of pictures and recommendations due to web space limitations.

My early morning routine, usually before 8 a.m., includes reading, meditation, tai chi, and qigong practice. Over the last 30 years, the tai chi way has become a way of life for me. (I could have included a hundred different shots, but this one is very recent – getting set up for a kick in the Yang 24 Form.) While we practice tai chi in many locations on Island, this spot is a five-minute walk from our condo where we usually stay. The beauty and quiet of this location are spectacular.
Maui Tropical Plantation – A fun place for family and a GREAT restaurant.
Maui Tea Farm – A recent find and family-oriented. A great stop on the way up to the Haleakala Crater.

There are many wonderful beaches on Maui. Most visitors are very familiar with the most famous ones, Kaanapali Beach and the ones along the Wailea resorts. However, I am picturing two of my favorites, Baldwin (2 miles in length) and Makena (1.5 miles in length) beaches. A major plus for Baldwin is that on the west end, there is a section protected by a breakwall known as Baby Beach. The downside is that it can be windy on occasion. Makena is protected by law from major resort development and is loved by Hawaiians for its natural beauty.

Traveling to the summit of Mt. Haleakala to see the volcano crater is always an adventure. On a clear day, the view is phenomenal. Even though it may be 80 degrees at the beach, it can be below freezing at the summit and very windy. Dress prepared! As you near the summit, if you have time, take a few minutes to hike the small forest, which contains some of the rare birds of Hawaii. (Good signage.) Above is a pict of the crater. You are seeing only a portion of the crater.
